Why
do domains expire? The first reason usually thought
of is that someone forgot to renew the domain. While
that is entirely possible, it is not very often the
case. Responsible registrars will send an email advising
of an approaching expiration. When the expiration date
passes the domain name registrar will change the nameservers
and if the domain is being used for an actual website,
the website will disappear from the web. That could
be a big alarm if it is a busy site. The domain owner
still can renew the domain and if the owner does not
wait too long there will not be a penalty for late renewal.
Another possibility is that the person who was in charge
of the company's domain portfolio was on vacation or
is just gone and whomever was supposed to take care
of the portfolio did not do a very good job. Maybe they
are doing two jobs now until there is a replacement
for the missing employee. If a domain was part of a
package deal and one price was paid for domain and hosting
combined, when the hosting is allowed to expire the
domain will expire also. Stay away from one payment
for everything. A domain should be able to be renewed
whenever you want or need to renew it.
Most
expired domain names have been knowingly allowed to
expire. There are only so many hours in the day and
sometimes some of the best domain names on a domain
list become casualties and are allowed to expire when
changes in the direction and focus of a business force
decisions regarding costs versus increasingly remote
benefits of renewing domains unrelated to present and
projected needs.
Unlike
expired milk, the fact that a domain is expired can
be a good thing. Generally, the longer a domain has
existed, more value exists. The domain is said to be
'aged', and the domain may be mentioned on other sites,
indexed in search engines, and may even have residual
traffic. When a domain calls up an impression an expectation
an idea, that is the sort of domain we look for. Expired
domain names which contain keywords, that are search
terms which might be used to locate a site about the
subject a domain suggests, are the sort of domains we
look for. We have searched so you don't have to, and
think of the domains in our portfolio as a resource
not to be held hostage with high prices.
